In November 1988, Tamil Rebels from PLOTE of Sri Lanka, at the instigation of a Maldivian national, Abdulla Luthfee, attempted an armed coup to overthrow the legitimate government of that small island nation in the Indian Ocean. President Gayoom of the Maldives appealed to many regional and global powers, but it was India that responded swiftly and effectively.
In Episode 1 we spoke about the initial call for help from Male, and the deliberations that went on in Delhi on how to respond. We also heard from Gp Capt Bewoor, CO of 44 Sqn (IL 76), Col Joshi, CO of 6 PARA, and Capt Gokhale, CO of INS Betwa. Episode 2 dealt with the discussions and preparations leading up to when the paratroops got airborne for Male in the IL-76 aircraft. Episode 3, dealt with the flight to Male, landing there, and how the Paras went into action, rescued the President and apprehended any rebels that were there.
Our latest episode, the last of the 4-part miniseries, deals with how INS Betwa and INS Godavari found the hijacked MV Progress Light on the high seas, stopped it, apprehended the rebels, and released the hostages.
